Volleyball

Hawk named Trojans’ coach

Jennifer Gandolph Hawk, a 2001 Center Grove graduate, was introduced as the new head coach at her alma mater on Friday. Hawk has spent the past four seasons in the same role at Perry Meridian.

Since graduating from the University of Michigan in 2005, Hawk has also worked as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans, University of Georgia and Samford University, and she was the head coach at Archbishop Chapelle High School in New Orleans.

Lancers sweep twinbill

Edinburgh dominated a Friday doubleheader with Morristown, winning by scores of 16-1 and 19-3. Carly Cowan was 3 for 3 with five RBIs in the opener for the Lancers (8-7). In the second game, Kaitlyn Bailey and MacKenzie Bieker were each 3 for 4 with four RBIs, while Gracie Crawhorn homered and drove in three.

Warriors crush Cardinals

Debbie Hill pitched a three-hitter and hit a home run to help power Whiteland to a 14-1 rout of Southport. Josslynn Harbert was 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for the Warriors (9-5), while Tara Watson drove in a pair of runs.

Girls tennis

Trojans roll past Twisters

Center Grove swept Oldenburg Academy on Friday, 5-0. Ashlee Fisk, Sonya Vyas and Deepthi Shankar took the three singles points for the No. 8 Trojans, Sydney Plowman and Sapna Vyas were victorious at first doubles and Hudson Gilstorf and Lauren Dick won at second doubles.

Woodmen fall to Quakers

Greenwood was beaten by Plainfield, 4-1. The lone point for the Woodmen (4-5) came at first doubles, where Sophia Davidson and Brooklyn Hanson won in straight sets.

Miscellany

Seniors sign college letters

Several local senior athletes signed letters of intent this week to compete at the collegiate level beginning in the fall.

In football, Greenwood’s Gabe Long will head to Indiana Wesleyan, while Whiteland teammates Chris Dawalt and Donnevan Plummer will head to Lake Forest College.

Whiteland’s Quinten Gillespie will play tennis at Southern Indiana, while fellow Warrior Bella Jackson signed to compete in track and field at Lipscomb.

Franklin College

Throwers shine at HCAC meet

Zak Wiley and Dalen Williams finished 1-2 in the men’s discus to lead the Franklin College contingent on the first day of the HCAC Championships in Terre Haute. Hunter Fields (hammer throw) and Taylor Tatlock (discus) turned in third-place finishes for the women.
