IHSAA unveils softball, baseball pairings

With the month of May upon us, spring postseason action is just weeks away — and on Sunday evening, the IHSAA revealed the sectional pairings for the state baseball and softball tournaments.

Familiarity will be the theme of the Class 4A softball sectional at Center Grove. Greenwood and Whiteland, who split their regular-season series, play each other in one first-round game on May 24, while Franklin takes on No. 3 Mooresville, who handed the Grizzly Cubs a pair of close 3-1 losses this past week. On the bottom half of the bracket, the host Trojans received a first-round bye and will take on Martinsville in a semifinal game. Center Grove beat the Artesians earlier this season, 6-1.

Elsewhere in 4A, top-ranked Roncalli opens with Southport in the first round of the New Palestine Sectional. The host Dragons, who handed the Royals their first loss of the season on Saturday, loom as a likely semifinal opponent.

Host Edinburgh opens its Class A softball sectional with a first-round game against Waldron. The winner of that game will face Morristown in a semifinal game, while Greenwood Christian received a bye and will face defending champ Indianapolis Lutheran in the other semi.

In Class 3A, Indian Creek drew a first-round game against the host team, second-ranked Edgewood.

Greenwood and Whiteland’s baseball teams will also meet up with one another in the Class 4A Mooresville Sectional. The Woodmen and Warriors got first-round byes and will see one another in a semifinal clash. On the top side of the draw, Center Grove will play Martinsville in the opening round, while Franklin takes on the host Pioneers.

Roncalli plays Southport in a 4A first-round game at Franklin Central.

Greenwood Christian and Edinburgh will meet one another in the first round of the Class A Morristown Sectional, with the winner likely to face second-ranked Southwestern in the semifinal round. GCA beat the Lancers 11-2 last week.

Indian Creek will play Edgewood in the first round of the Class 3A sectional at Owen Valley. The Braves have won four straight sectional championships.
