Ferguson, Swann land NFL shots

Center Grove graduate Parker Ferguson, who played on the offensive line for Air Force the past four seasons, signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent on Saturday night.

Ferguson’s former Trojan teammate Jovan Swann, who played on the defensive line for Stanford and Indiana University, will attend a rookie minicamp tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers May 14-16.

Grizzly Cubs topple Irish

Winning pitcher Jackson Klem and Nolan Netter each hit a home run as Franklin outslugged Class 4A No. 6 Cathedral on Saturday, 11-6. Grant Roberts had three hits for the Grizzly Cubs (12-4), while Jace Fowler, Max Clark, Logen Devenport, Klem and Netter added two apiece.

Braves swat Hornets

Justin Partyka struck out 14 during a complete-game four-hitter while leading Indian Creek to a 6-2 home win over Beech Grove.

Warriors split on road

Jonathan Crowley drove in three runs and Drew Helton pitched a complete game as Whiteland won at Jennings County, 9-2, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Warriors (5-9) lost the nightcap, 10-1.

Warriors win invitational

Host Whiteland swept its invitational tourney on Saturday, beating Shelbyville, International and University. Sarah Scott was 3-0 at first singles for the Warriors (11-4), while Brooke Boehnlein and Kaylee Hoagland won three doubles matches. Sara Ullrich was 2-0 on the day, as was the tandem of Molly Brosnan and Natalie Cloer.

Braves edged by Northview

Indian Creek suffered a 3-2 setback against Northview despite wins from Lauren Foster at No. 1 singles and Avery Burress and Addy Tunell at second doubles.

Boys golf

Trojans place fifth, Franklin 11th

Playing in the Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday, Center Grove finished fifth with a team score of 332, while Franklin was 11th in the 21-team field at 349. Sam Slaughter paced the Trojans with an 81, with Luke Beetz (82), Brandon Heffner (84) and Drew Rowen (85) close behind. The Grizzly Cubs were led by Damon Dickey (82) and Quin Edwards (84).

Center Grove’s White squad, meanwhile, finished first at the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational with a score of 311. Sam Hord led the way with a 74.

Ultimate frisbee

Trojans stay perfect with win

Center Grove Ultimate took an early lead and held it throughout, remaining unbeaten with an 11-7 victory at Brebeuf on Saturday. The Trojans improved to 6-0 on the season.

Franklin College

Tatlock takes HCAC javelin gold

Taylor Tatlock was first in the javelin at the HCAC Championships on Saturday, one of three Franklin College medalists on the afternoon. Zach Roberts was second in the men’s 400 hurdles and teammate Jaycee Wilburn took third in the 800. The Grizzlies finished seventh in both the men’s and women’s standings.

Baseball gets two of three

Franklin College took a 9-8 victory Saturday in the completion of a suspended game with Earlham, then split a scheduled twinbill with a 12-8 loss and a 10-7 win. Nick Wright walked off the partial contest with an RBI single in the 12th inning for the Grizzlies (18-10), while Logan Demkovich homered and drove in three runs in the finale.

Softball earns road split

Alisha Burch took a perfect game into the sixth inning and Franklin College beat Defiance in eight, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Grizzlies (18-10, 7-5 HCAC) lost the second game, 4-3.
