Greenwood man charged with child molesting, rape

Police arrested a Greenwood man Monday after two teenagers reported he raped them last summer.

Marthan Christian Lewis, 25, is charged with child molesting, a Level 1 felony, and rape, a Level 3 felony. A Level 1 felony is the highest level crime a person can be charged with besides murder. Lewis could face up to 56 years in prison.

A young girl told a family member last June Lewis had just raped her at a Greenwood apartment, and that he stopped when someone else entered the apartment, according to a probable cause affidavit filed April 13 in Johnson County Circuit Court.

Lewis then told her to go into a bathroom. The victim said she locked the bathroom door behind her. At the time of the incident, she could not get away from Lewis and she was scared, she said.

The family member took the victim to Community Hospital South, and she was transported to Riley Hospital for Children’s Pediatric Center of Hope due to her age, according to court documents.

Then, in January, another victim reported Lewis had raped her last June at a Greenwood apartment, too, causing her a lot of pain, court documents show.

The second victim told police Lewis threatened to hurt her if she told anyone about what happened, and she thought that meant he would kill her, according to court documents.

Greenwood detectives interviewed Lewis last June at the Greenwood Police Department. He told them he had just been released from prison and was staying in Greenwood briefly before moving back to Kokomo, court documents said.

Online court records show Lewis had been serving a four-year sentence for carrying a handgun with a prior felony conviction in the last 15 years. His probation began May 27, 2020.

He denied ever touching the first victim inappropriately or raping her, and refused a DNA swab, according to court documents.

In January, after the second victim reported she was raped, police served a search warrant on Lewis at the Howard County Probation Office, and collected a DNA sample, court documents show.

DNA evidence supported the first victim’s claims that Lewis had raped her, according to court documents.

He is being held at the Johnson County jail on $56,000 bond. An initial hearing is set for Monday.
