Doris Davis Fletcher

GREENWOOD, INDIANA

Doris passed away on May 1. She was a long-time resident of Greenwood, Indiana. She was born May 8, 1933 in Mount Vernon, Indiana to Harvey E. and Hazel Marie (Thompson) Davis. She was the middle child of five. She lived in Poseyville during her early years and the family moved to Greenwood when Doris was in the sixth grade.

After graduating from Greenwood Community High School, she attended Indiana College of Beauty Culture in Indianapolis and worked as a beautician there until her marriage to Charles (Chuck) William Fletcher, Junior in 1954. She was a full-time, committed parent to her children, Kathy (born in 1955) and Larry (born in 1957). Doris provided unconditional love, strong values, and lots of her time, serving as Brownie and Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and school volunteer.

Doris was passionate about social justice, equal opportunity, and safety for children and volunteered at agencies pursuing these goals in Indianapolis. She made many friends from diverse cultures and learned a great deal from them. Doris believed strongly in nurturing girls to become strong and independent women. She worked as a staff member for Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls. She later returned to hair styling and teaching at a beauty school in Greenwood.

When grandchildren came along (Jeremy 1987, Kyle and Kendra 1990), she became the consummate grandmother and provided an essential, non-judgmental presence in their lives. She served as their confidante, and her home was a safe haven during times of stress. Playing in Grandma’s kitchen and Grandpa’s truck were favorite activities.

Doris enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening, and especially cooking. She was an excellent and adventurous cook. Doris was predeceased by her husband Charles, and is survived by children Kathy (Ron), Larry (Ann), grandchildren Jeremy (Jen), Kyle, and Kendra, and her sister Jill Davis Chenoweth. A celebration of life will be planned at a later time.
