Police: Runaway teen stole car, tried to buy another with fake check

Greenwood police arrested a 15 year old they say stole a car and tried to buy another one with a fraudulent check.

Police arrested the teen Tuesday evening on charges of check deception over $50,000, conversion of a motor vehicle, false informing and possession of marijuana.

The Greenwood Police Department responded to a call about 5:30 p.m. from a man who reported the teen had tried to buy a car from him with what he believed to be a fake check, according to Greenwood Police Department news release.

The man told police he was trying to sell his BMW, and the teen, claiming he was an adult, responded to the online ad. The cashier’s check he attempted to pay with appeared to be printed on cheap paper and had no security features, such as watermarks or micro printing, the news release said.

The teen gave officers a fake name and said he was 18. Police ran the plates of the Mustang he was driving and discovered the car was reported stolen in Speedway, and the teen fit the description of the suspect. They also found a small amount of marijuana inside the car.

Officers identified him as a 15-year-old runaway from Indianapolis, according to the news release.

The teen was taken to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.
