Track and field

Trojans first at Pike

Center Grove’s boys and girls both finished atop an invitational field at Pike on Saturday. Brandon Wheat led the way for the Trojan boys, winning the 100 and 200 meters and teaming with Connor Delp, Micah Coyle and Drew Wheat to take the 4×100 relay. Delp was also victorious in the 300 hurdles and Amar Singh won the pole vault.

The girls got first-place finishes from Makensie Kramer (300 hurdles), Bella Hodges (800), Cassidy West (high jump), Ella Rasche (discus), Taylor Jarosinski (pole vault) and the 4×100 relay team of Dee Biddings, Madi Kramer, Kristen Laverne and Skyler Sichting.

Softball

Lancers sweep tourney

Edinburgh got grand slams from Carly Cowan and Mackenzie Whetstine to beat Greenwood, 17-6, capping a perfect Saturday on its home field. The Lancers (10-8) had previously beaten North Decatur, 5-2, behind a three-run homer from MacKenzie Bieker in the eighth inning.

Greenwood’s Taylor Dick was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs in the loss to the Lancers.

Baseball

Trojans blank Artesians

Zach Ferguson scattered three hits over six innings as Class 4A No. 3 Center Grove coasted to an 8-0 home win over Martinsville on Saturday. Matthew Sauter scored two runs for the Trojans (18-2).

Boys golf

Trojans third at State Preview

No. 2 Center Grove placed third in the State Preview tournament at Prairie View on Saturday, posting a team score of 313 to finish behind Guerin Catholic and Carmel. Brandon Heffner and Sam Hord each posted a 77 for the Trojans, followed by Luke Beetz (79) and Sam Slaughter (80).

Damon Dickey was second individually with a 2-under-par 70 for Franklin, which tied for 15th in the 21-team field.

Center Grove’s White team, meanwhile, also totaled a 313 to take first at the Bloomington North Invitational. Ted Lasaru paced the winners with a 75.

Girls tennis 

Trojans tie for second at MIC

Center Grove finished in a tie for second place in the MIC tournament at Ben Davis on Saturday. The No. 7 Trojans got runner-up finishes from Deepthi Shankar at third singles and from Hudson Gilstorf and Lauren Dick at No. 2 doubles.

Warriors take a pair

Whiteland defeated Franklin and Lebanon at home on Saturday. Candace Stephenson was perfect at No. 3 singles for the Warriors (13-4), while Karlee and Kaylee Hoagland won twice at second doubles.

Ultimate frisbee

Center Grove remains perfect

Center Grove Ultimate capped off an unbeaten regular season with an 18-0 rout of Fishers on Saturday. The Trojans (8-0) will be the top seed in the state tournament, which will be played this weekend at Maple Grove Elementary.

Franklin College

Softball keeps season alive

After falling just short, 6-4, in the opening game of its doubleheader at Hanover, Franklin College rolled to a 12-2 victory in the nightcap to secure a place in the HCAC tournament.

Shelby Crockett had three RBIs and Natalie Weber three hits in the win for the Grizzlies (19-13, 8-8 HCAC), who will be the No. 5 seed in the league tourney this week.

Baseball sweeps Hanover

Jacob Heuchan homered in both games and Franklin College rode strong pitching efforts from Nick McClanahan (14 strikeouts) and Tyler Wick to a doubleheader sweep at Hanover, winning by scores of 9-1 and 10-4. Tysen Lipscomb knocked in seven runs on the day for the Grizzlies (22-12), who will host Mount St. Joseph this weekend in the first round of the HCAC tournament.
