College notebook: Rees leads UIndy softball to GLVC title

The University of Indianapolis softball team won six of seven games to capture the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament in East Peoria, Illinois. Catcher Lexy Rees led the way for the Greyhounds as the former Greenwood player homered three times during the tournament on her way to totals of eight hits and 11 RBIs.

Greenwood

Taylor baseball player T.J. Bass singled twice and belted a home run to lead the Trojans past Spring Arbor, 8-2, to open the Crossroads League tournament. Bass doubled in a loss to Huntington and homered, doubled and singled in a 20-9 victory over St. Francis.

Reid Werner pitched eight innings, allowing one hit and striking out six batters for UIndy baseball in a 4-3 decision over Lewis.

Whiteland

Delanie Gourley tossed a five-hitter for Franklin College softball in its 12-2 win at Hanover.

Danielle Munn picked up the win for Indiana Wesleyan in a 6-5 win over Marian at the Crossroads League tournament, pitching the final two innings and allowing three hits and two runs. Munn pitched three innings of middle relief in the next game, a 5-0 loss to Taylor.

Earlham pitcher Nick Carrizales worked the first six innings of his team’s 8-1 win over Defiance, allowing six hits, striking out five and not issuing any walks.

Morehead State sophomore pitcher Luke Helton took the loss in a 4-3 decision at Tennessee Tech after allowing three hits, three runs and striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings.

Anderson senior Branton Sanders singled, doubled and homered in the Ravens’ 7-6 victory over Transylvania in the first game of a doubleheader. AU lost the second game, 3-2, though Sanders did have a single and double.

Franklin

Franklin College outfielder Jacob Heuchan doubled and homered in a 9-6 loss at Hanover. He then hit a home run and singled twice as the Grizzlies exacted revenge with a 9-1 victory. Heuchan made it three straight games with a round-tripper in a 10-4 victory at Hanover.

Indian Creek

Shae Biddle, who runs for the UIndy women’s track and field team, placed seventh in the 800-meter run at the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet in Rolla, Missouri.

Center Grove

Senior pole vaulter Kylie Falcone tied for third place for the UIndy women’s track and field team at the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet.

Northwestern softball split a four-game series at Purdue as junior catcher Jordyn Rudd finished with a total of five hits, one run driven in and a run scored.

Abby Herbst had a double and single for Wisconsin in its 2-1 loss at Michigan State to open a four-game series. The Badgers closed the series with a 3-0 victory, with Herbst accounting for one of the runs.

Jackson Young pitched the final three frames for Franklin College baseball in 9-6 loss at Hanover, striking out five batters along the way.

Senior catcher Will Smithey had three singles for Uindy baseball over the four-game series against visiting Lewis.

Infielder A.J. Poynter doubled and scored a run as the Butler baseball team lost to Creighton, 11-10.

Indiana Wesleyan baseball opened the Crossroads League tourney with a 16-10 defeat of Bethel, with Nick Coy and Tye Thixton collecting three hits apiece. Coy scored three runs for the Wildcats, while Thixton drove in four. Coy then doubled and Thixton singled in IWU’s 3-1 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene; both contributed two hits in a 4-2 victory against Nazarene in the title contest.

Duke sophomore golfer Erica Shepherd helped the Blue Devils qualify for the NCAA Championships after shooting a three-round score of 220 in regional competition in Columbus, Ohio. Duke tied Arizona State for second in the team standings, while Shepherd tied for the 13th-lowest individual score.
