College notebook: Shepherd helps Duke to national semis

Sophomore Erica Shepherd helped the Duke women’s golf program cap its season with a deep run in the NCAA Championships that came to an end with a 5-0 semifinal loss to Oklahoma State in match-play competition in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Center Grove graduate finished the season having played 19 matches and averaging an 18-hole score of 72.42, third-best among Blue Devils players.

University of Indianapolis senior defensive back Connor Steeb was named to the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference football first team. Steeb averaged a team-high nine tackles per game in the shortened spring season.

Northwestern softball played three games as an NCAA regional qualifier before being eliminated by Kentucky, 7-2. Junior catcher Jordyn Rudd had a double in a 3-2 loss to the Wildcats.

Franklin

The Taylor men’s golf team tied for 11th place at the NAIA national tournament in Silvis, Illinois. Junior Javan Johnson tied for seventh individually to earn all-tournament honors with a four-round total of 289 (+5). All-tourney status assures Johnson an exemption into the 2022 national finals.

Franklin College senior Jacob Zachary was named honorable mention on the all-HCAC men’s tennis team.

Greenwood

UIndy softball closed its 46-8 season by advancing to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regionals in Allendale, Michigan. Greyhounds catcher Lexy Rees finished with five hits, including a double and home run, and four runs over four tournament games.

UIndy pitcher Reid Werner was named second team all-Midwest Region after completing his senior baseball season with a 7-2 record, a 2.84 earned run average and five complete games.

Franklin College junior Maddie Bright and teammate Maecee Terhune, a freshman, were both named honorable mention on the all-HCAC women’s tennis team.

Whiteland

Senior Branton Sanders belted a solo home run for Anderson baseball in its 7-3 victory over Franklin College in the HCAC tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. The Ravens were eliminated the next game with an 8-5 loss to Bluffton as Sanders singled and doubled. The first baseman was named first team all-HCAC after finishing the season with a .370 batting average and 12 home runs.

Indian Creek

Franklin College senior Hunter Fields placed 22nd in the hammer throw with a best of 40.86 meters at the Augustana Midwest qualifier in Rock Island, Illinois.
