Two kids were taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital after lightning struck a building at the FFA Indiana Leadership Center in Trafalgar during a severe thunderstorm Thursday.
About 12:20 p.m., crews responded to a report of a lightning strike at a small wooden building at the center, 6595 S. 125W, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The caller told dispatch there were no apparent serious injuries but several of the children and adults were complaining of minor pain from being shocked, said Andrew Barnhart, chief deputy.
Medics evaluated at the scene about 15 kids who thought they had been shocked, and transported two via bus to the hospital for further evaluation, said Joe Ramey, the FFA center’s executive director.
None of the injuries appear to be serious but the children were taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution, Ramey said.
“We were really fortunate considering everything that happened,” Ramey said.
The structure was evaluated by the first fire service on scene and several departments disregarded the call because there were no flames showing, Barnhart said.
There was not damage to any of the buildings on site at the FFA center, Ramey said.
Sheriff’s deputies responded along with Trafalgar, Nineveh, Bargersville, Needham and Franklin fire departments.
