Mall jewelry store robbed, employee injured

Greenwood police are searching for a suspect who stole three rings Monday evening from a jewelry store at the mall.

The Greenwood Police Department responded to a report of a robbery about 6:30 p.m. at Kay Jewelers in the Greenwood Park Mall, 1251 N. U.S. 31.

An employee told police she assisted a black man wearing a white t-shirt with a multi-colored logo on it, khaki pants and a white hat. He appeared to be about six feet tall and was heavy-set. He came into the store asking to look at rings, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

She took out a ring he asked to see in the case. While he was looking at it, he pushed her to the ground, grabbed two more rings out the case and ran away, the report said.

He ran out of the mall and drove away before police arrived. A witness outside said he got into a small white SUV with a Massachusetts license plate, according to the report.

The employee sustained a minor injury to her finger, which appeared to be discolored, and she was in a lot of pain, the report said. She went to the hospital after being released from the scene, the report said.

Greenwood detectives are investigating the robbery.
