Police: Greenwood man beat, strangled pregnant woman

A Greenwood man was arrested after police say he battered and strangled a pregnant woman.

Derrick Taylor, 32, was arrested Wednesday on charges of domestic battery against a pregnant woman and strangulation of a pregnant woman, both Level 5 felonies.

The Greenwood Police Department responded about 1:15 p.m. to a report of a domestic dispute at an apartment in the 1200 block of Beacon Point Drive, Greenwood.

Police spoke to Taylor first at the scene. He said he and the woman he lived with had an argument, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

Inside the apartment, the woman told police she had also called 911 Monday about another domestic dispute with Taylor. At the time, she told the officers the bruises and scratches on her face and neck were from trying to get her daughter out of the pool, according to the report.

She said she did not tell the officers the truth about what happened Monday because she was scared of Taylor, but she told officers who responded Wednesday that he assaulted her, the report said.

Taylor scratched her face, then grabbed her by the neck to push her against an open door. The force of him pushing her caused the door knob to puncture a hole in the drywall, according to the report.

The woman told police she is seven months pregnant, the report said.

Taylor denied what happened in an interview with police. He was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he is held without bond.
