Weather service spotter reports tornado in eastern Indiana

PORTLAND, Ind. — A tornado has been spotted in eastern Indiana with reports of damage to some homes in the area.

The National Weather Service in northern Indiana received an indication by radar of a tornado in Jay County which was verified by a spotter in Portland about 3:50 p.m. Friday, said Nathan Marsili, a meteorologist.

“We got video of a large tornado and got reports of houses damaged,” Marsili said.

No injuries have been reported. The weather service likely will do a survey Saturday of the area were the tornado was spotted, he added.

Portland is northeast of Indianapolis.

The tornado was associated with storms that moved through parts of the state.

The weather service reported on its website that there was a risk of severe thunderstorms late Friday afternoon to late Friday night from just north of Kokomo to south of Bloomington. The storms could bring strong winds, large hail and the chance of an isolated tornado. Heavy rain also could lead to flooding concerns.
