Motorcyclist airlifted after crash on SR 252

A Franklin man is in the hospital after a motorcycle crash Wednesday evening.

Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash at 252 E. State Road 252 in Nineveh Township about 6:14 p.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived at the scene, a witness was tending to another man who was lying on the side of the road next to a motorcycle, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

One of the drivers involved in the crash told police he was driving his car west on SR 252 when he glanced down at his phone to check the GPS. He looked up from his phone, and saw a motorcyclist traveling east on SR 252 right in front of him. He tried to swerve away, but the two crashed, the report said.

He said he did not know if he crossed over the yellow center line, and he said he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the report.

The witness who was driving about eight car-lengths behind the motorcyclist at the time of the accident told deputies he saw the driver of the car swerve across the yellow line in the road before jerking back, at which point the collision occurred.

The driver of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries to his left leg and was taken by hospital to Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis, the report said. He was in stable condition Thursday, Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

The driver of the car was not injured, and was sent to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw to test for drug or alcohol use, according to the report.
