Woman shot in Clark Township, investigation ongoing

A Greenwood man was arrested after a woman was shot in rural Clark Township on Sunday.

Levi C. Griffith, 21, was arrested on an initial charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Medical assistance for a woman was requested Sunday at around 11 p.m. for a reported fireworks injury, however, medics determined the injury was a gunshot wound, according to a press release from Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene in the 500 block of Griffith Road in rural Clark Township, they spoke to Griffith and observed that he was behaving irrationally, the release says. Griffith told deputies he had been firing warning shots at trespassers and didn’t realize he had shot the woman, the release says.

Other family members told deputies that Griffith has been acting irrationally for several weeks, the release says. After family members realized Griffith had shot his gun, they took possession of it and turned it over to deputies, the release says.

The woman, who is not being identified at this time, is in stable condition, the release says.

This case is still under investigation and appropriate charges will be filed with the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office when the investigation is complete, said Andrew Barnhart, chief sheriff’s deputy.

Griffith was released on bond and has no current access to guns, Barnhart said.

Given the nature of the shooting, the sheriff’s office and the prosecutor’s office are working together on red flag proceedings for public safety, he said.
