Tanning bed catches fire at New Whiteland salon

A New Whiteland tanning salon caught fire Wednesday evening when a tanning bed overheated.

Tan Worx II, in Tracy Plaza just off of U.S. 31, was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived about 7 p.m. The tanning bed, which failed to turn off, began overheating and smoking, said Dale Saucier, chief of the New Whiteland Fire Department.

Bargersville, Franklin, Greenwood and White River Township fire crews worked with New Whiteland’s volunteer department to disconnect power and extinguish the fire quickly, Saucier said.

The salon was open at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries. He believes no one was using the tanning bed when it overheated, he said.

Though smoke permeated the building, fire damage was limited to the tanning bed, Saucier said.

Tan Worx II said at 9 p.m. Wednesday on Facebook the salon would be closed until further notice.
