A fire broke out Monday afternoon in a New Whiteland garage, damaging multiple houses and structures.

The fire started about 3:27 p.m. in a detached garage in the 400 block of Melrose Drive, and spread quickly to a shed on the property and the exterior of the house, said Dale Saucier, New Whiteland’s fire chief.

The flames crossed property lines, damaging wooden fences and sheds, siding and an above-ground pool. Three neighbors were impacted by the fire, Saucier said.

Investigators ruled the cause of the fire accidental. Kids were playing with a lighter in the garage and caught a box on fire, he said.

Damage is estimated to be between $200,000 and $250,000. The homeowner, a contractor, lost a lot of his tools in the fire, Saucier said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Bargersville, Franklin, Greenwood, Whiteland and White River Township fire departments assisted.
