The Greenwood City Council voted unanimously to advance an ordinance that would expand the city’s truck ban to portions of Honey Creek and Smokey Row roads to a second reading on Monday night.

Traffic travelling north on Honey Creek Road, from Whiteland to Tracy Road, and on Smokey Row Road, from State Road 135 to Honey Creek Road, would be restricted to most trucks, except for local deliveries, according to city documents.

Both Honey Creek Road and Smokey Row Road are narrow, two-lane roads. There are alternative roads that are better for trucks, city documents show.

In the past, accidents on the two roads caused trucks to veer onto properties and cause damage, city officials said.

To expedite the process, Gibson requested the council suspend the rules to move the ban to its first and second readings, but it only made it through first reading. The ban will be up for a final vote at the council’s next meeting Aug. 2.
