Man who assaulted woman charged

Prosecutors charged a Greenwood man accused of assaultingĀ a woman.

Justin Tyler Owens, 32, is charged with domestic battery, a Level 6 felony. If convicted, he could face up to 2.5 years in prison.

Police responded after two callers reported the altercation shortly after 9 p.m. on Aug. 1 in the 1000 block of Bexley Drive. One of the callers said they could hear a man saying he was going to rip someoneā€™s face off, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Johnson County Superior Court 2.

When officers arrived, they could hear screaming coming from an apartment. A woman answered the door holding a baby and told police Owens had been drinking. She led police to the bedroom, where they found Owens sitting on the bed, according to court documents.

Owens appeared upset, and told police he would fight them and take away their guns so they would have to shoot him. When police attempted to handcuff Owens, he refused to cooperate and was unwilling to give a statement to police, court documents show.

The victim told police Owens threatened to kill her and beat her face in, and physically assaulted her, according to court documents.

The victim went to the bedroom with the baby. Owens grabbed her and the babyā€™s right leg. She put the baby down on the bed and tried to talk to him, court documents show.

After the assault, the victim tried to grab her phone from the bedroom, and Owens threw it across the room, according to court documents.

She was able to get to the phone and call 911, court documents show.

Owens’ bond is set at $5,600. An initial hearing is set for Sept. 1.
