A man was hospitalized after a house fire Friday in White River Township.

White River Township firefighters were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. Friday to the 5000 block of Mount Pleasant Street, near County Line Road and State Road 37, shortly after 7 p.m. Friday on a report of a fire at a single-family home.

A neighbor told dispatch heavy flames and smoke were coming from the home, and that the person who lived inside had not been seen all day, according to a White River Township Fire Department report.

As first responders made their way to the scene, five other people called 911 to report the fire, and firefighters were told someone may be trapped inside the home. As a result, multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene, according to the report.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy black smoke billowing from the roof. As firefighters worked to put out the fire, first responders removed an occupant from the home, the report said.

Emergency medical personnel treated the occupant and transported them to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis in serious condition. An update on the person’s condition was not immediately available.

The fire was under control within an hour. The cause and origin of the fire are unknown and remain under investigation.
