Dorothy M. Dougherty

INDIANAPOLIS

Dorothy Marie Johnson Hobson Dougherty was born in Washington County, IN, on August 21, 1926, to the late Elmo Marshall Johnson and the late Lillie Mae Mead Johnson Lovell.

Dorothy grew up in Pekin, IN, married, and went on to have four children – Betty Jo King (Robert), Joyce Ann Sexton, Linda Kay Goddard (Edward), and Larry James Hobson (Kimberly).

She made a career for herself at National Bank of Greenwood, and she then spent 17 years as a tax preparer at H&R Block. After starting her family at a young age, one of her proudest accomplishments was graduating from Manual High School at the age of 53.

In her younger years, Dorothy enjoyed camping and horseback riding, and she adored square dancing and line dancing into her 80s. Whether a cross-country bus tour or a girls trip with her daughters, Dorothy loved to travel. Her friends were a priority in her life, and she made sure to meet them for breakfasts out or walks at the mall as often as possible.

Dorothy was passionate about Indiana University, Butler University, and Pacers basketball and could talk your ear off about all three – most likely while playing a mean card game of Hand and Foot.

Dorothy’s greatest joys in life came from her family, which includes her 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Just weeks after enjoying a surprise party to celebrate her 95th birthday, Dorothy died peacefully at home surrounded by love on September 23.

Friends and loved ones are invited to join Dorothy’s family as they celebrate her life at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN on Wednesday, September 29th. The calling will be held from noon – 2 p.m., with the funeral to begin at 2 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery.
