Police: Intoxicated man broke into Greenwood home

Police arrested a Greenwood man after he broke into a home while intoxicated over the weekend.

Drew Patrick Baumgardner, 34, was arrested on charges of residential burglary, a felony, and public intoxication, a misdemeanor. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Police were called shortly after 9 p.m. Friday to a house on Pebble Creek Drive in Greenwood. A woman reported there was an intoxicated man in her laundry room. When police arrived, three residents of the home were outside, and Baumgardner was sitting in the middle of the street, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The woman told police she thought her son was being loud, so she went toward the back of the home, near the laundry room, to tell him to quiet down. That’s when she realized there was an unknown man in the laundry room, and yelled for the other occupants of the home. The residents removed Baumgardner from the home, and he sat in the street until police arrived, according to the report.

There were young children inside the home at the time of the incident, the report said.

Outside the residence, the residents told police they did not know who Baumgardner was, and that he confused the woman for one of his acquaintances, according to the report.

When police spoke with Baumgardner, they smelled an alcoholic odor coming from him. He also had bloodshot eyes and heavily slurred speech, the report said.

Baumgardner told police he was OK, and agreed to speak to them. Police asked him where he lived, and he replied “right there,” pointing to the house he broke into. Police asked him again, and he gave the same reply, according to the report.

Police pointed at the home on Pebble Creek Drive and asked Baumgardner if he entered it. Baumgardner told police he did, and when police asked for his address again, he replied “right there,” the report said.

Police conducted a portable breathalyzer test which found that Baumgardner had a .498 level, more than six times the legal limit. They asked Baumgardner if he had anything to drink earlier that evening, and he shook his head no, according to the report.

Baumgardner was taken to a local hospital for a medical exam. After being cleared by doctors, he became aggressive and yelled at police for not notifying his emergency contacts. Police said he did not have his phone during the course of the incident.

He was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $2,200 bond, and was put on 72-hour hold.
