Indian Creek’s new assistant superintendent has local roots

Indian Creek Schools’ new assistant superintendent spent her entire career at Johnson County schools.

Andrea Perry’s education career spans 21 years. Perry most recently was principal of Indian Creek Intermediate School for six years before taking Andy Cline’s spot as assistant superintendent in July — Cline left to be superintendent at Spencer-Owen Community Schools.

Her Trafalgar roots extend beyond her time in educational leadership, Perry said.

“We live in the community; my husband and I do with our kids. I’m a graduate of Indian Creek, and there’s something enticing about being back in the community I grew up in and graduated from,” she said.

Prior to her stint as principal, Perry taught and coached at Center Grove schools. She spent two years at Pleasant Grove Elementary School, and four years at Middle School North. She then spent three years as the principal at East Side Elementary School in Edinburgh.

The move to leadership from teaching was a challenge due to the level of responsibility, but benefited Perry in her ability to collaborate with school personnel and increase her level of interaction with the school community, she said.

Continuing to build those relationships with staff, parents and community members is what drew her to the new job in administration.

As assistant superintendent, Perry will work on curriculum and has a goal of further developing the school safety program, which now includes a school resource officer and improved entrances at all schools, she said.

In the end, her goal is to make the student experience the best it can be, she said.

“I’m looking forward to supporting all our students, (kindergarten) through (12th grade),” Perry said. “It could be academics, it could be art or athletics. I look forward to supporting students in all those areas. We’re continuing the great work we’ve done with school safety. That needs to stay at the forefront to keep kids and staff safe.”

She brings commitment and experience to the role, Edsell said.

“She has a dedicated commitment to Indian Creek schools and is very vested here,” he said. “She has a great passion for students and is able to help our staff in areas of data analysis and areas of curriculum and instruction. Her skill set is very complementary to my leadership and the rest of the leadership team.”
