Police: Man assaulted officer during struggle

Police arrested a Greenwood man after he refused to leave a Whiteland woman’s property and assaulted a police officer during a struggle.

Craig Allen Cross, 34, of Greenwood, was arrested on a charge of battery against a public safety official, a Level 5 felony, and resisting law enforcement, a misdemeanor. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Whiteland police were called to the 600 block of Walnut Street shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, after Cross refused to leave a woman’s property when she asked him to. Whiteland police requested assistance from New Whiteland police. When they arrived, officers found Cross sitting outside the home, according to a Whiteland Police Department report.

Cross was upset that the woman wanted him to leave, and when police attempted to go inside the house to speak with the woman, Cross became angry and walked toward the front door. One of the officers told Cross he couldn’t go into the house, and Cross told the officer to get out his way and continued to try enter the house. Police told Cross to sit down, but he refused and tried to pull away from officers, according to the report.

Police put Cross on the ground, and during the struggle, one of the officers received a cut on his face, the report said.

Cross was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $4,300 bond.
