James A. McGinnis

GREENWOOD

James A. McGinnis, 95, of Greenwood, IN passed away Monday October 4, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 4, 1926 in Indianapolis, IN to Edward and Norma (Sparger) McGinnis. He married Mary M. (Derleth) McGinnis on October 20, 1951 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianapolis, IN. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2016.

He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theater serving aboard the USS Trolius.

He had served with the Indianapolis Fire Department from 1948 and retiring as Lieutenant in 1975 after 28 years of service. He was all about being on the frontline fighting fires and serving. He was mostly stationed at Fire House 26.

He later owned and operated J.A. McGinnis Construction from 1975 until 2003 as a respected and well know custom home builder in Johnson County.

He was builder of the year in 1981.

James was a member of Saints Francis and Clare Catholic Church in Greenwood, Johnson County Builders Association, Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his sons Greg McGinnis (Linda) of Indianapolis, IN, Gary McGinnis (Debbie) of Greenwood, IN, Kevin McGinnis (Cindy) of Greenwood, IN, a daughter Mary Kay Bishop (Michael) of Greenwood, IN, Jim was blessed with eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary M. (Derleth) McGinnis, an infant son Donald Joseph McGinnis, siblings, Eddie McGinnis, Erwin McGinnis, Joe McGinnis, Elenor Clements, Leona Jones, Mary Whinery and Theresa Lombardo.

Father Steve Giannini will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday October 18, 2021 at 11AM at Sts. Francis and Clare Catholic Church 5901 Olive Branch Road in Greenwood, IN.

Friends may call Sunday October 17, 2021 from 2PM until 4PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and Monday October 18, 2021 from 9:30 AM until service time at the church.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery with military honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard and the Greenwood & Whiteland Honor Guard.
