Police: Indy man stole truck, ATV from Greenwood schools

Police arrested an Indianapolis man they say stole numerous items, including a tablet, a truck and an ATV within a span of a few hours on Tuesday in Greenwood.

Michael Robert Dishman, 27, was arrested on charges of burglary and vehicle theft, both felonies, and theft from a vehicle, a misdemeanor. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Greenwood police were called to the 1400 block of Turkington Court shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday after a man reported his work truck was stolen from his driveway. When police spoke to the man, he said the last time he saw the truck was the night before, and he believed he left his keys inside the vehicle, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The victim’s neighbor’s security camera caught an unknown subject walking through the neighborhood just before 4 a.m. Tuesday. The subject was seen driving the missing truck a short time later, according to the report.

The victim told police his truck had a GPS system that had shown the truck along the 500 block of McCarty Street. But when police arrived, they could not find the truck, the report said.

Around 12 p.m. Tuesday, police recovered the truck after a separate incident. When police asked the victim if anything was missing, he told police about 500 business cards, a garage door opener, an ID card, a bank card, a Samsung tablet and the key to the truck were missing, according to the report.

The victim found items that were missing from his neighbor’s vehicle while searching his truck. The neighbor told police someone had gone through his vehicle and taken his car registration, insurance card and some other important documents. The items were returned to the neighbor, the report said.

About 10 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Demaree Road after a couple reported that a white man with long brown hair ran over their bushes in an orange ATV. The couple told police he drove the ATV into a nearby apartment complex. The couple identified Dishman as the one driving the ATV, according to the report.

At the apartment complex, police spoke with a maintenance worker who said a resident had reported a suspicious man walking around the complex, and an orange ATV was left in a garage on the 2300 block of Thorium Drive. Officers found the ATV, which belonged to Greenwood Community Schools. Police also found a skateboard on the ATV, the report said.

Dispatchers told police a suspicious man — later identified as Dishman — was seen walking in the area of Thorium Drive and Galena Drive. Police found Dishman, and detained him without incident, according to the report.

Dishman gave officers permission to pat him down, and they found several items on him: two Apple cell phones, two pieces of paper, a Samsung tablet, a charging cord, a stylus pen, a Topgolf card and a key ring with two small keys that appeared to be for an ATV. They also found a credit card with the name of the man who reported his work truck stolen, along with the man’s ID, the report said.

Dishman told police the phones and tablet were his, but he didn’t know they were stolen, and denied being on the ATV, according to the report.

Police contacted Greenwood schools, and an employee identified the ATV as district property. The employee told police the ATV was taken from the district’s garage building, located behind Greenwood Community High School, sometime after 8:30 a.m. that morning. A second employee told police they had seen the ATV drive down Averitt Road earlier that morning, the report said.

Greenwood schools gave police security video showing Dishman walking onto school property around 10:30 a.m., and driving the ATV on the south side of the high school, according to the report.

Police arrested Dishman and took him him to the Johnson County jail. He told police he had been up for four days and had used meth in the past, the report said.

Dishman remains at the jail where he is held without bond.
