Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Black

MARTINSVILLE

Dorothy L. (Oliver) Black, 95 passed away Monday, September 13, 2021, at Grand Valley Health and Rehab in Morgan County, Indiana. She was born February 5, 1926, in Beech Grove, IN to Robert J. Oliver and Laura V. (Gregory) Oliver. She was a 1944 graduate of Beech Grove High School. She married Robert A. Black on June 29, 1946, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Beech Grove, IN. He preceded her in death on September 1, 2007. Surviving her are three daughters and one son, Cynthia (David) Warnick and Teresa Black and Robert (Deborah) Black and Kathleen (David) Janneck, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (of sixty-one years) her son James (Carol) Black, her sister (infant) Joann Oliver and brother James Oliver.

Dottie wrote many stories, poems, plays and songs throughout her life. Some were used by the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at St. Jude Church. One of her most cherished jobs was working for the University of Indianapolis Library. In her retirement years she was an avid and quite good golfer. Once, while at her home in Leesburg FL, she scored a hole in one! In addition to learning to golf in Florida, she danced, swam, walked, led exercise classes, joined the cheerleading squad, and volunteered as the community librarian. Dottie loved God, her family, reading, dancing, singing, and scrabble! You will never find a more loving or caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, or friend than Dottie. Her kind and loving nature attracted many to her so that she made long lasting friends her entire life.

The Reverend Steve Giannini will conduct her funeral mass on Thursday September 23 at 10:30 am at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 1709 E. Harrison Street, Martinsville, IN.
