Man charged after he stole ATV from Greenwood schools, truck

Prosecutors charged an Indianapolis man police said stole numerous items, including a truck and an ATV within a span of a few hours last week in Greenwood.

Michael Robert Dishman, 27, is charged with auto theft, a Level 6 felony, and conversion, a misdemeanor. If convicted of all charges, he faces up to three-and-a-half years in jail.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Demaree Road after a couple reported that a white man with long brown hair ran over their bushes in an orange ATV. The couple told police he drove the ATV into a nearby apartment complex. The couple identified Dishman as the one driving the ATV, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday in Johnson County Circuit Court.

At the apartment complex, police spoke with a maintenance worker who said a resident had reported a suspicious man walking around the complex, and an orange ATV was left in a garage on the 2300 block of Thorium Drive. Officers found the ATV, which belonged to Greenwood Community Schools. Police also found a skateboard on the ATV, according to court documents.

Police later found Dishman nearby, and detained him without incident. When officers searched him, they found several items on him, including two Apple cell phones, a Samsung tablet, a charging cord, a Topgolf card and a key ring with two small keys that appeared to be for an ATV. They also found a credit card with the name of the man who reported his work truck stolen, along with his ID, court documents show.

Dishman told police the phones and tablet were his, but he didn’t know they were stolen, and denied being on the ATV. Police later contacted the man whose ID they found, and he identified several of the items as his. The items were inside his work truck which he had reported stolen earlier that morning, according to court documents.

Police also contacted Greenwood schools, and an employee identified the ATV as district property. The employee told police the ATV was taken from the district’s garage building, located behind Greenwood Community High School, sometime after 8:30 a.m. that morning. A second employee told police they had seen the ATV drive down Averitt Road earlier that morning, court documents show.

Greenwood schools gave police security video showing Dishman walking onto school property around 10:30 a.m., and driving the ATV on the south side of the high school, according to court documents.

Dishman was initially held without bond before being released last week. A warrant was later issued for his arrest after he violated the terms of his probation.

An initial hearing is set for Nov. 1.
