Police: Man downloaded child porn

Prosecutors charged a Greenwood man police say downloaded pornographic images of children from the internet.

James Ray Doan, 51, is charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, a Level 6 felony. If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail.

Greenwood police were investigating the sharing of child pornography on file-sharing networks when officer’s found an IP address that was of investigative interest. The address had previously been associated with investigations into child abuse material on file-sharing networks, according to a probable cause affidavit filed last week in Johnson County Superior Court 3.

Police found portions of a pornographic video depicting a child. Officers then searched for the IP address’ location online and found that it was located in Greenwood. They asked for and received a subpoena for the internet subscriber’s information, according to court documents.

Based on information police gathered and from the internet provider, they obtained a search warrant for a home in the 600 block of Broadway Street in Greenwood. Police in March seized several items and spoke with Doan and another relative, court documents said.

Doan told police he was the only one to use computers in the home. He had two computers and numerous high-capacity hard drives for his photography business, according to court documents.

He told police he built his own computers, and that he was familiar with BitTorrent, a file sharing network, but not the networks officers had found child pornography on when they found his IP address. He also said while he had downloaded adult pornography, he had not downloaded any child pornography, court documents said.

Police began to examine the items seized, however, due to the sheer number of items that needed to be investigated, the process took several months. They had seized several computers, external hard drives, USB drives and other storage media, according to court documents.

Several devices contained child exploitation material, or deleted material, while others had indicators that it previously had material, court documents said.

During the search, police found artifacts that contradicted Doan’s claims that he did not know what the file sharing networks were that police were investigating. Police found several internet searches relating to using a file sharing utility for the networks. They also found that a similar program was installed on Doan’s computer, according to court documents.

Several files on the computer showed that while the files were deleted, there were several files that had names associated with child pornography. Police also found several pornographic images with children on one of the external hard drives seized, court documents said.

A warrant was issued for Doan’s arrest on Thursday, and he was arrested Friday. He remains at the Johnson County jail on $300 bond. An initial hearing has not been set.
