College notebook: Pine places 10th at conference meet

Former Greenwood runner Ethan Pine, a Wabash College senior, placed 10th at the North Coast Athletic Conference cross country meet in 26 minutes, 53.4 seconds to earn all-conference honors.

Greenwood

Manchester sophomore Joy Maze finished the volleyball team’s four-set loss to visiting Mount St. Joseph with nine kills and a service ace. The Spartans concluded their 11-16 season with a loss to Transylvania in the HCAC tournament despite Maze totaling seven kills and eight digs.

Freshman Noah McCracken took 66th place individually as Franklin College men’s cross country placed sixth at the HCAC meet in Shelbyville. In the women’s race, sophomore Mallory Watson was 69th for the Grizzlies.

Indian Creek

St. Francis football won at Taylor, 42-31, as junior linebacker Isaiah Lacey led the defense with 10 tackles, two of them for loss, and a forced fumble.

Whiteland

Guard Sidney Crowe finished with three points, two rebounds and an assist as the St. Francis women’s basketball squad opened the season with an 80-74 loss to Indiana Tech.

Taylor volleyball player Sarah Scott had seven kills as the Trojans defeated St. Francis to close the regular season.

Center Grove

Junior guard Spencer Piercefield scored 13 points and dished out seven assists as Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball opened the season with a 90-82 win over Indiana Tech at the WHAC/CL Crossover tournament. Piercefield also contributed 15 points, five assists and four rebounds in a 99-91 loss to Cornerstone and added 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in IWU’s 98-74 win against Olivet Nazarene.

Sophomore guard Claire Rake finished with three points and a rebound as Truman State opened its season with an 83-58 loss at Northern Iowa.

Emma Jones had 13 kills and three digs for UIndy volleyball in a five-set loss to Rockhurst. The junior also had six kills and an assist for the Greyhounds in a sweep of Missouri S&T and four kills and three digs in a loss at Southern Indiana.

Texas A&M lost a pair of four-set matches at Mississippi State, with Aggies senior Macy Carrabine providing her team a total of 23 digs and five assists.

Ashley Eck helped Indiana State defeat Valparaiso in volleyball with 10 digs and an assist. The sophomore helped ISU sweep Missouri State with her seven digs and one assist.

Taylor defensive back Tyler Watson had four tackles in his team’s 42-31 home loss to St. Francis. Teammate Brad Boswell, a defensive lineman, had two tackles.

Kansas State senior Russ Yeast had two tackles and broke up a pair of passes in a 31-12 win over TCU.

Lucas Hunter recorded a pair of tackles for Indiana State in a 44-2 loss at North Dakota State.

Rose-Hulman running back Alonzo Johnson carried five times for 15 yards in the team’s 48-12 defeat of Bluffton, while Riley Roberts had three tackles in the win.

Greenwood Christian

Freshman forward Izzy Reed had five points, four rebounds and two assists as Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball opened the season with a 71-51 win against Aquinas. Reed totaled nine points and five boards in the Wildcats’ 78-70 overtime victory at Madonna.

Franklin

IUPUI volleyball scored home victories against Youngtown State and Robert Morris as Jaguars sophomore setter Brooke Phillips totaled 82 assists and 15 digs.

Franklin College outside hitter Alivia Brown finished with seven kills and three digs as the Grizzlies closed their season by defeating host Defiance.

The Franklin College men’s cross country team placed sixth at the HCAC meet in Shelbyville as Drew Hargis and Eli Cochrane finished 31st and 32nd, respectively. Teammate Drew McGaha was 73rd overall, followed by Brayden Devenport in 93rd.

Rose-Hulman defensive back Tyce Miller had two tackles and an interception as the Engineers defeated Bluffton, 48-12.
