John W. Duncan

INDIANAPOLIS

John Wayne Duncan, 80, Indianapolis, IN, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021.

John was the son of John Wilson Duncan and Henrietta M. (Crooke) Duncan. Both parents preceded him in death in 1997. John was a 53 year member of Brookside Masonic Lodge #720, 45 year member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, receiving the Honor of 33 at Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1997, and also a member of the Murat Shrine. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Chorus, (1978-2020), and served as Manager for 33 years. John was a past President of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite 33 Association, and later served as the Association’s Secretary/Treasurer. He was also a member of National Sojourners Ft. Harrison Chapter #66.

John was a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Safety Patrol from 1958-2010, assisting Speedway guests in Stand C (1958-1959), Stand A (1960-1963), and Stand E for 52 years.

He was Life-Member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway International Association of Old-Timers. In 1974, he served as Metropolitan Division Chairman with the Greater Indianapolis United Way. He also had served as an advisor for Junior Achievement for Central Indiana. John was Board member for the USS Indianapolis Museum. In February of 2005, John was honored by being “adopted” into the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization, receiving Honorary Member status. For many years, John assisted the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization with event planning and reunion activities. In May of 2006, John was honored with a membership in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

John was employed by Diamond Chain Company for 34 years, retiring in 1998. During his tenure at Diamond Chain, he served in a variety of positions. After his retirement, John was employed at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, serving as Public/Community Relations manager, Valley Hospitaler, Advertising Director and Director of Member Services.

John was the husband of Mary Evelyn (Preston) Duncan, and the father of two children, Jennifer Lynn Duncan Bailey (Brad), and John Wilson Duncan. Other survivors include two sisters, Sharron Mae Kurz of Greenwood, IN, and Linda Joyce Snell (Tim) of Muncie, IN; and two granddaughters, Maranda Leigh Bailey and Alaina Jade Gordon-Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Madison Marie Bailey.

Visitation will take place from 4-7PM, Wednesday, at Wilson St.Pierre Funeral Service &Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main Street. A funeral service will take place at 11AM, Thursday, at the funeral home, concluding with a 33rd Masonic Memorial Service.
