College notebook: Hardin flourishing in starter’s role at Purdue

Purdue senior guard Cassidy Hardin scored 14 points and had three assists to help the Boilermakers women’s basketball team defeat Western Michigan, 70-62. The former Center Grove player contributed six points, four assists and two rebounds to the team’s 76-64 victory at Illinois State.

Center Grove

Bentley junior Ella Thompson tallied nine points, dished seven assists and grabbed four rebounds in a season-opening 99-31 defeat of Carlow. She then helped her squad down St. Anselm, 67-60, with 15 points, eight rebounds and an assist.

Vermont guard Emma Utterback scored six points and had four assists in a 68-61 overtime loss to American and four points in a 67-50 loss to Marist.

Indiana junior Trayce Jackson-Davis blocked seven shots to go with his 19 points and seven boards to lead the as the Hoosier men beat Northern Illinois, 85-49. He had 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 76-74 win over St. John’s.

Guard Spencer Piercefield had five points, four assists and two rebounds for Indiana Wesleyan in an 88-67 win over IU East.

University of Indianapolis junior guard Ben Nicoson finished with three rebounds and two assists as the Greyhounds opened the men’s season with an 80-47 defeat of Lake Erie. He had three more boards in a 77-60 loss to Grand Valley State.

Franklin College swimmer John Hasquin helped the men’s 200 freestyle relay win in a time of 1:30.1 against Transylvania.

Senior safety Russ Yeast made four tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up another three for Kansas State in a 34-17 win over West Virginia.

Rose-Hulman senior Alonzo Johnson rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown in the team’s 58-21 victory against Mount St. Joseph. Teammate Riley Roberts made three tackles and returned an interception 39 yards.

Marian senior linebacker Bailey Bennett made four tackles and broke up a pass in the Knights’ 41-7 defeat of Lawrence Tech.

Indiana State sophomore Lucas Hunter had six tackles in the football team’s 47-21 loss to Southern Illinois.

DePauw freshman Trent Veith had one catch for 19 yards as the Tigers lost the annual Monon Bell game at Wabash, 42-35.

The Taylor football team closed its season with a 51-23 loss at Siena Heights, with seniors Sam Bolin and Tyler Watson contributing seven and four tackles, respectively, for the Trojans. Brad Boswell had two tackles, including one for loss.

Freshman running back Carson Steele rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown for Ball State in its 37-17 home loss to Central Michigan.

Indiana State volleyball defeated visiting Northern Iowa in five sets as sophomore Ashley Eck had 10 digs and a service ace for the Sycamores. The team then swept Drake, with Eck providing 11 digs, two assists and two aces.

UIndy volleyball player Emma Jones had 10 kills as the Greyhounds lost at home to Illinois-Springfield in three sets.

Indianapolis wrestler Gleason Mappes won his match at 184 pounds against Newman, but lost against his opponent from Central Oklahoma.

Franklin

Junior Bayleigh Torrance scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Franklin College women’s basketball team to a 91-76 win over visiting Olivet.

Franklin College men’s diver Gauge Creech won both the 1- and 3-meter events in the Grizzlies’ triumphs over Centre and Transylvania.

Franklin College men’s cross country closed its season at the Great Lakes Regional in Shelbyville. Sophomores Drew Hargis (28:33.5) and Eli Cochrane (28:51.7) established new personal-best times.

Marian sophomore tight end Drew Byerly made two catches for 55 yards as the Knights improved to 8-2 with a 41-7 decision over Lawrence Tech.

Rose-Hulman defensive back Tyce Miller made two tackles as the team defeated Mount St. Joseph, 58-21.

Ball State linebacker Clayton Coll had six tackles and an interception in the team’s 37-17 loss to visiting Central Michigan.

IUPUI volleyball closed its season with a four-set loss at Purdue Fort Wayne. Jaguars setter Brooke Phillips finished with 37 assists and nine digs.

Indian Creek

Senior guard Jared DeHart had two points, four assists and a rebound to help Bethel men’s basketball down Lincoln College, 93-81.

St. Francis linebacker Isaiah Lacey had two tackles in a season-closing 37-7 loss to Concordia (Michigan).

Greenwood

Franklin College women’s swimmer Alayna Kenworthy won the 200 individual medley against Transylvania in a time of 2:15.64. Grizzlies junior diver Faith Jackson won the 1-meter competition against Centre with a score of 233.48.

Sophomore Mallory Watson tied her personal-best time of 27:22.4 while competing for Franklin College women’s cross country at the Great Lakes Regional. Wabash College senior Ethan Pine finished 57th of 266 runners with a time of 26:14.2 in the men’s race.

Indiana wrestler Nick Willham advanced to the semifinals of the 197-pound weight class at the Mountaineer Invite.

Greenwood Christian

Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball won its own Leah Whitaker Memorial Classic with victories over Clarke University and Missouri Baptist as freshman Izzy Reed combined for three points and five rebounds in the two games. The Wildcats downed Michigan-Dearborn, 71-53, with Reed adding two points and a pair of steals.

WHITELAND

Senior guard Sidney Crowe finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists as St. Francis women’s basketball defeated IU South Bend, 65-59. She added three points and two rebounds in the Cougars’ 93-59 win at IU Southeast.
