Greenwood woman dies in car crash

A Greenwood woman is dead and another is injured following a two-car crash Tuesday evening on the city’s east side.

Rebecca Martin, 65, was taken to an area hospital where she later died.

First responders were called to the intersection of Sheek Road and Emerald Lakes Drive, southwest of the Main Street interchange with Interstate 65, around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the report of a car crash with entrapment.

The injured driver told police when she turned onto Sheek Road from Emerald Lakes Drive, she saw Martin’s car coming over the crest of a hill on Sheek Road, heading southbound. Martin’s car struck hers, rolling it onto its passenger side and trapping her in the car, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

A witness told police Martin did not seem to be traveling at high speeds, and that it may have been difficult for her to avoid the injured driver due to the short distance between the vehicles, according to the report.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by Greenwood police.
