Police arrested a Pendleton man on a dozen charges after police say he assaulted a Greenwood woman and her child.

Ryan C. Watts, 36, of Pendleton was arrested on preliminary charges of trafficking with an inmate, resisting law enforcement, strangulation and breaking and entering, all felonies. He was also arrested on two counts of possessing a controlled substance, two counts of battery, two counts of invasion of privacy and two counts of criminal mischief, all misdemeanors. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Greenwood police were called to the 800 block of Durham Way shortly before midnight on Nov. 23, after a woman called 911 saying Watts was fighting with her child. As police approached the scene, they were told the man was choking the woman, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

When police arrived, Watts ran from the home. Police deployed a K9 to track him down, according to the report.

The child told police Watts had been at the home after being released from jail, and had argued with him for most of the day. When the child tried to get Watts to leave, Watts spit on him, reentered the home and began arguing with him again, the report said.

When the woman called police, Watts grew more upset and threw a vase at a door. Later, the woman walked upstairs after Watts, and saw him dump the contents of her purse out. When she tried to stop him, he threw her to the floor and choked her, according to the report.

Officers were unable to take Watts into custody due to him fleeing the scene, the report said.

The next day, police were called to the home again, after the woman told 911 dispatchers Watts had returned. When police arrived at the home and tried to get Watts to leave, he jumped out of a second-story window and ran from officers, according to the report.

Police caught up with Watts after a short chase. He told police the child had hit him, but police were unable to verify his allegation, the report said.

Watts told police he ran the first time because he didn’t want to deal with police. He also said he didn’t hear the officers though they told him repeatedly to stop, according to the report.

Police later discovered Watts had entered the home through a makeshift path to a second-story window, causing damage to a gutter, but he told police he entered through one of the doors after the victim let him in. When police asked him again how he entered the home, he said he didn’t remember, the report said.

When was taken to the Johnson County jail, where they filled two containers with Clonazepam, Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine, all controlled substances, according to the report.

Watts remains at the jail on $27,800 bond.
