Greenwood police warn of tax scam

Greenwood police are warning the public about a new scam from people claiming to be state officials.

Police say a Greenwood resident recently received an official-looking document which said the State of Indiana had issued a tax warrant for their arrest out of Johnson County. The document stated the resident owed several thousand dollars to the state, and said they should call a 1-800 number to avoid “collection action.” When the number is called, it is answered by someone who says they are with “Tax Solutions” or “Tax Group,” according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

Police were unable to verify the legitimacy of the company in question, according to the news release.

If residents received any similar documents, they are advised not to call the listed number to avoid any potential fraud. People should instead call the county government entity the letter says they owe money to and work directly with them, the news release said.
