Three local students receive Lilly scholarships

A trio of Johnson County students will no longer have to ponder how to pay for college.

Greenwood Community High School student Andrew Jones, Whiteland Community High School student Jenna Kelsay and Franklin Community High School student Jenna Newton’s received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, which will cover tuition and fees, as well as $900 a year for books and equipment. The term of the scholarship is four years of undergraduate full-time study, provided the students attend an Indiana college, according to a Johnson County Community Foundation news release.

The scholarships are supported by a grant to Independent Colleges of Indiana from Lilly Endowment. The three scholarship recipients were among 70 applicants. As recipients, they’ll also be able to participate in the Lilly Scholars Network, linking them to opportunities and resources on campus and in their communities, according to the news release.

The Johnson County Community Foundation has overseen the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for a quarter-century. Students are selected by a 10-person Johnson County Community Foundation scholarship committee, which evaluates students based on their community service, academic performance, leadership and character. The committee interviews the finalists before deciding on recipients, the news release said.

Since the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program formed in 1998, it has given out $439 million in tuition grants to more than 5,000 students.
