Greenwood Walmart store offering new COVID pills

One local Walmart store has doses of the two new COVID-19 antiviral drugs.

Select Walmart pharmacies, including the Walmart store at 882 S State Road 135, Greenwood, began stocking Pfizer’s paxlovid and Merk’s molnupiravir in Indiana on Thursday. The drugs are also available at the Walmart at 4650 S. Emerson Ave, Indianapolis and stores in Shelbyville, Martinsville and Columbus.

The medications are approved for use under an Emergency Use Authorization. They were distributed to the Walmart stores through the U.S. Federal Retail Pharmacy Therapeutics Program.

The medications are available with a prescription from a healthcare provider. They may be prescribed for patients experiencing treat mild to moderate symptoms who are at high risk if their condition worsens, according to the drug’s EUA.

Individuals with COVID-19 should not go inside the store to pick up the medication and should instead use curbside pickup or, if applicable, the pharmacy drive-thru.

Walmart worked closely with the federal government and state health departments to select locations where states determined the treatment was needed most, according to a news release from the company. The initial supply of both drugs is limited, but Walmart pharmacies are ready to help expand treatment access nationwide when possible, the release continues.

The drugs are available at Sams Club Pharmacies in other states, but Indiana Sams Club locations do not have the drugs in stock at this time, according to a spokesperson from the company.
