A Martinsville man is dead following a fatal two-car accident on the Johnson-Morgan County line Thursday morning.

The Bargersville Fire Department responded to a serious accident on Interstate 69/State Road 37 northbound at Banta Road, south of State Road 144 around 2:12 a.m. Thursday. When Bargersville Fire arrived, first responders were administrating aid to a male driver who was rear-ended by a semi-truck, said Mike Pruitt, Bargersville Fire Deputy Chief and Johnson County Coroner.

The man was later identified as 45-year-old Jason D. Phelps of Martinsville, according to a Johnson County Coroner’s Office news release.

Due to the location, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and the state police are investigating the accident, and Johnson County will be handling the death investigation, Pruitt said.

I-69 in both directions was closed for a few hours, and lanes were reopened by 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The accident remains under investigation, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
