County residents can start filing their state and federal individual income tax returns Monday.
The Internal Revenue Service, along with the Indiana Department of Revenue, will accept 2021 individual income tax returns until mid-April. Residents have until April 18 to file both their state and federal tax returns and to pay any taxes owed, the agencies said.
The department of revenue is encouraging Hoosiers to not file their taxes until they have gathered all the necessary paperwork to prevent process delays. Attempting to file without all the documents needed could ultimately postpone any refunds a Hoosier may receive, according to a department of revenue news release.
The department is also encouraging customers to utilize electronic filing, online payments and direct deposit to improve the quality and speed of return and refund processing, according to the news release.
Some eligible filers may also be able to file both their state and federal taxes for free through the INfreefile program. Participating companies and eligibility requirements can be found online at freefile.dor.in.gov, the news release said.
