County GOP creating back-up plan for caucus

County GOP officials are preparing for all eventualities as a winter storm threatens to derail a Greenwood City Council caucus.

Bob Dine resigned from the city council last month, leaving open an at-large seat to be filled by the Johnson County GOP. The caucus is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. today in the council chambers at Greenwood City Center.

However, considering the winter storm, GOP officials were creating contingency plans in the event they need to postpone the caucus. County GOP chair Beth Boyce met with county election officials Monday to make plans if weather makes it hard for precinct committeemen to travel to the city center for the caucus, she said.

In the meantime, the county GOP is watching the weather and plans to be in contact with Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers about road conditions in the city. Johnson County GOP will know by this afternoon whether the caucus needs to be rescheduled, Boyce said.

If the caucus is delayed, it has to be rescheduled 10 days after, at minimum, meaning it will most likely be two weeks from today. However, there are questions about whether the filing period would be reopened, and the county GOP is waiting to hear back from state election officials regarding that procedure, she said.

Four candidates are vying for the vacant seat — David Cox, Shane Cunningham, Drew Foster and Ronald Palmer.
