College notebook: Greenwood alums earn HCAC honors

Two Greenwood graduates, Franklin College junior diver Faith Jackson and freshman swimmer Alayna Kenworthy, were named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference athletes of the week.

Jackson established a new program standard on the 3-meter board, scoring 319.10 points for six dives. Kenworthy helped the Grizzlies defeat Illinois Wesleyan with two individual wins (200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley) and one runner-up (100 breaststroke) while also swimming on the first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Greenwood

T.J. Bass helped Taylor open its baseball season with a split of four games in Arizona, totaling eight base hits, driving in six runs and scoring four.

Franklin College junior Nick Patton took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.16 seconds at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes indoor track and field meet. For the women’s team, junior Janae Johnson establish a new best time in the 60 hurdles (10.40), while teammate Mallory Watson helped the 4×400 relay take third.

Indian Creek

Bethel senior guard Jared DeHart scored 20 points and made two steals in the team’s 93-84 loss at Grace College. He had 23 points in the team’s 81-79 loss to Marian.

Franklin

Franklin College diver Gauge Creech won HCAC male diver of the week for the 13th time in his career, winning both diving events at Illinois Wesleyan. Creech scored 317.55 points over six dives on the 3-meter board and 300.49 points over six dives on the 1-meter board.

University of Indianapolis sophomore Emma Treibic posted a time of 5:28.5 to win the mile run at UIndy’s Tom Hathaway indoor track and field classic.

Freshman Drew McGaha posted a personal-best time in the 800-meter run for Franklin College with a 2:06.91 in placing fifth at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes indoor track and field meet. McGaha and Eli Cochrane took part in the Grizzlies’ third-place 4×400 relay.

Vincennes pole vaulter Matt Frazier finished sixth at the Tiger Paw Classic in Louisville with a best of 3.85 meters (12 feet, 6 inches.)

Junior Bayleigh Torrance had 16 points and seven rebounds in only 19 minutes of play as the Franklin College women’s basketball squad topped Manchester, 71-45.

Huntington guard Kyra Baker had three points, four assists and two steals to help her team defeat Spring Arbor, 61-48.

Whiteland

Lipscomb freshman Bella Jackson placed second in the pentathlon at the Tom Hathaway indoor track and field classic, scoring a total of 3,479 points. Along the way, Jackson set new school records in the 60-meter hurdles (9.04 seconds) and high jump (1.77 meters, 5-foot-9¾).

Sophomore Carter Crowe had 10 points, three assists and two rebounds for Franklin College in its 83-82 loss to Manchester. He added eight points and two rebounds in a 72-62 loss to Transylvania.

Franklin College guard Libby Baker scored two points, had three assists grabbed seven rebounds in the team’s 71-45 downing of Manchester.

Center Grove

Louisville sprinter Kiyah Yeast ran a personal-best time of 24.44 seconds in the 200-meter dash to place fourth at the Cardinals’ own invitational. Yeast also helped the 4×400 relay take second.

Indiana freshman pole vaulter Taylor Jarosinski cleared a height of 3.61 meters (11 feet, 10 inches) to place ninth at the IU Relays.

Purdue guard Cassidy Hardin had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the Boilermakers’ 80-66 victory over Minnesota. The team then lost at Nebraska, 81-66, with Hardin producing 11 points and two steals.

Vermont women’s basketball lost at Maine, 58-37, despite 11 points and three rebounds from Emma Utterback. The junior guard had 11 points, eight boards and four assists in a 56-30 victory over NJIT.

Sophomore guard Claire Rake scored five points off the bench for Truman State in its 90-63 triumph over McKendree.

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished three assists to help Indiana win at Maryland, 68-55.

Indiana Wesleyan defeated visiting St. Francis, 87-79, as Spencer Piercefield nearly produced a triple-double with 22 points, eight boards and seven assists. The junior had 15 points, three rebounds and six assists in a 94-75 victory at Goshen College.
