Johnson County digs out after major winter storm

The county was blanketed with as much as 6.5 inches of snow after Winter Storm Landon dropped rain, ice and snow between Wednesday and Friday morning.

The storm first dumped rain during the day on Wednesday, then switched to sleet as the temperatures plummeted. Snow began to fall early Thursday and didn’t let up until Friday morning in many parts of the county.

The result was about 6.5 inches in Greenwood, and 5.8 inches in Franklin, according to the National Weather Service.

About 4 inches was reported in Bargersville, but that is likely incomplete because reports from nearby Mooresville got five inches, said Aaron Updike, a meteorologist with the NWS in Indianapolis.

Totals in southern Johnson County are likely somewhere between the 5.8 inches reported in Franklin and the 3.5 inches reported in Columbus, Updike said.

There was a slight chance of flurries between 10 p.m. and midnight Friday, but no additional accumulation was expected, according to the forecast for Johnson County.

The winter storm forced all of the county’s K-12 school districts to close on Thursday and Friday. Students in all districts but Center Grove were eLearning at home on Friday.

Ivy Tech and University of Indianapolis canceled in-person classes, while Franklin College allowed professors to hold class in-person at their discretion, according to emails sent to students.

The snow brought accidents and slide-offs that kept local first responders and tow truck drivers busy. At the same time, it brought entertainment to snow-loving adults and children.

Since the snow has mostly subsided, city, town and state plow trucks are now focused on cleaning off the snow instead of keeping up with the storm. Crews on Friday were treating and plowing roads to get as much snow and ice off as possible before temperatures in Johnson County fell below zero Friday night and into this morning.

Temperatures will climb to 20 today, but early in the day, wind chills will be as low as -15, according to NWS predictions. Saturday is the coldest day in the seven-day forecast.

Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing for the most part, so the snow won’t be melting away anytime soon, the NWS says.
