Valentine’s Day events line Johnson County calendars

Johnson County lovebirds and even those who haven’t found their special someone will have plenty of events to choose from this Valentine’s Day weekend.

Today will feature two events. Vino Villa will host its annual Galentine’s Day wine and dine event at 200 N. Madison Ave. in Greenwood. There, women can take their best female friends for a night out. The event, which takes place from 4 to 8:30 p.m., requires reservations, which can be made by calling 317-882-9463.

Johnson County residents who to get crafty this weekend can make their own gnomes today with help from Armbruster Crafts. Tickets for the event are $20 and all materials to make the gnomes, including fabrics, socks, rice, polyfill, fabrics and coloring are included, said Kiersten Armbruster, owner of Armbruster Crafts.

The program will be located at 400 E. 600 N., Unit 1 in Whiteland, and will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

“There’s no sewing involved, which is super nice if you want to bring kids to the class,” Armbruster said. “We have about three to four different Valentine’s-themed fabrics as well as solid fabrics to customize the hat, we have coloring for the beard. It’s really affordable at $20 to come and learn to make a gnome and take them home.”

Registration is required, and can be completed at ambrustercrafts.com under the “classes” tab, she said.

Couples can make their way to The Sycamore at Mallow Run, located at 8080 W. Whiteland Road in Bargersville, for night of food, wine and dancing from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. Appetizers will be served at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and wine at 6:45 p.m. and dancing until 9:30 p.m., with live music from The Castlewood Singers and the Cool City Band. Tickets, which are $75 each, can be purchased at mallowrun.com/valentinedinner.

Parents and their children can show off their Valentine’s Day moves Friday at Greenwood Community Center, located at 100 Surina Way, which will host a parent-child dance and celebration from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets, which are listed at $5 each, can be purchased by clicking on the “events” tab of greenwood.in.gov.

On Saturday, women and their female friends can enjoy another Galentine’s Day event, this one at Farm Girl Mercantile at 436 E. Jefferson St. in Franklin. There, attendees can sip wine from Mallow Run, browse a special fashion sale and take advantage of giveaways from noon to 4 p.m. To learn more about the event, visit the “Farm Girl Mercantile” Facebook page.

People interested in the history of Valentine’s Day can attend a Saturday workshop at the Johnson County Museum of History, located at 135 N. Main St. in Franklin. The free event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. but does not require attendance during all three hours, said David Pfeiffer, the museum’s director.

“Our education coordinator puts up a slideshow going over the history of Valentine’s Day, its origins, when it first became popular and a display of historic valentines from different time periods going to the late 1800s, early 1900s and from the ’80s and ’90s,” Pfeiffer said. “They used to be pretty elaborate as opposed to the pieces of cardboard we have now. Some are very elaborate, three-dimensional heart shaped, some have cherubs on them. Some are Valentine’s Day poems. We have craft supplies out for people. This gives them inspiration for when they want to create their own valentine.”

A fancy meal is often at the center of most couples’ Valentine’s Day plans, and people will have multiple opportunities to take part in special event dinners in Franklin Saturday. One dinner, at the Garment Factory at 101 E. Wayne St., will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and will include music from the Southside Jazzers. Attendees can make reservations by emailing [email protected].

The Johnson County Shrine Club, located at 751 W. King St., will host its own dinner with music from Scott Coner. The dinner will last from 5 to 10 p.m., with music starting at 7 p.m. To learn more about pricing and how to make a reservation, visit the “Johnson County Shrine Club” Facebook page.

Elks Club Lodge No. 1818 at 56 E. Jefferson St. will have a Valentine’s Day dinner Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. with live music starting at 8 p.m. The meal will include spinach, artichoke, ricotta-baked chicken and Italian beef on a roll wish a side of pasta and bread and salad, along with a shrimp cocktail and tiramisu. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. For more information on reservations, call 317-738-9924.

Creative Grounds Fine Arts Academy will host a Valentine’s themed musical show, titled “All You Need is Love.” The musical, consisting of 20 students from elementary to high school, will feature music from The Beatles, as well as several different broadway shows, said Mark Landis, the academy’s executive director.

The academy’s Studio One space, situated on the northwest side of the Greenwood Park Mall, 1251 US 31 N., Greenwood, near the Cheesecake Factory, will run Saturday and Sunday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. For tickets, visit tickets.cgfinearts.org.
