Women’s swimming wins HCAC title
Franklin College rolled to a fifth consecutive HCAC championship over the weekend, scoring 1,011 points to nearly double runner-up Transylvania. Samantha Phillips, who won the 100 and 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle, was named the league’s female swimmer of the year, with Faith Jackson named the top diver for a second time after winning the 1-meter title. Also earning individual gold for the Grizzlies were Emme Egan (50, 100 and 200 free), Alayna Kenworthy (200 and 400 IM), Caileigh McCafferty (100 and 200 backstroke), Erin Perkins (1,650 freestyle), Becky Pfeifer (200 breaststroke) and Caroline Glaze (100 breaststroke); Franklin took the 200, 400 and 800 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.
The Grizzlies also finished second on the men’s side with 810 points. Junior Gauge Creech, who won the 1-meter and 3-meter titles, was named the league’s Diver of the Year for the third time. Jack Burke took first in the 200 backstroke, while Kosmo Wojack won the 200 butterfly and 400 IM. Paul Klaeren (200 breaststroke) and Nolan Davis (200 freestyle) also earned gold.
Andy Hendricks was selected as the HCAC’s Coach of the Year for both men and women.
Men’s basketball tops Bluffton
Franklin College earned a 75-65 victory at Bluffton on Saturday. Matt Krause had 19 points and Mitch O’Mara added 15 for the Grizzlies (10-13, 6-10 HCAC), who also got nine points and eight assists from Trey Flatt.
Women’s basketball drops road test
A late comeback bid fell short as Franklin College lost at Bluffton, 62-56. Destinee Cross scored 16 points to lead the Grizzlies (7-14, 5-9 HCAC).
Boys basketball
Grizzly Cubs’ rally falls short
Trailing by 17 midway through the third quarter, Franklin got to within five and had the ball with about a minute left before Columbus East held on for a 59-52 victory on Saturday. Dylan Beverly led the Grizzly Cubs (6-13) with 20 points and six rebounds, while Micah Davis added 17 points.
Cougars win PAAC crossover
Matt Teike’s 16 points led Greenwood Christian to a 49-41 triumph over Seton Catholic in the PAAC fifth-place game on Saturday. Aden Sloan added nine points for the Cougars (12-9).
