Car crashes into Trafalgar building, causes $12K in damage

A Trafalgar business suffered an estimated $12,000 in damage after a car drove into its building this weekend.

Firefighters responded to the 100 block of N. State Road 135 around 11:26 a.m. Friday after receiving reports that a vehicle had driven into a building. When they arrived, they found it was a three-vehicle accident, and noticed the building had sustained damage from the accident. There was no damage to the main structure, but there was damage to an attached porch, according to a Trafalgar Fire Department report.

The driver of the car that hit the building had left the scene, but was later found and returned by law enforcement, the report says.

The exact cause of the accident is unknown, but officials believe the driver was coming to a stop on N. State Road 135, but failed to stop. They attempted to avoid rear-ending a vehicle in front of them, swerved around it and hit a parked car and the building, said Mark Dunn, Trafalgar fire chief.

All of those involved declined treatment, according to the report.

Firefighters evaluated the building for stability after the accident, and determined determined the damage did not pose a risk to life or safety. The porch was taped off, and the building’s occupants said they would use another entrance to the building, the report says.
