Four people are hospitalized after a SUV crashed into a Greenwood ice cream shop Saturday evening, police say.

Greenwood police and fire responded just before 8 p.m. to the Cold Stone Creamery in the 700 block of U.S. 31, near Fry Road, on the report of a mass casualty event. When they arrived, they learned it was not, but that two people who were inside the shop at the time of the crash were severely injured, police said.

The first officer to arrive on scene applied a tourniquet to one of the victims, an adult woman, who suffered severe lacerations to her leg. All four victims were rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Two are severe, and two are in stable condition, said Jim Ison, Greenwood police chief.

All four victims were inside the shop at the time of the crash, but it is not clear yet whether they were customers or employees. Several people were inside the building at the time of the crash, including customers and workers, Ison said.

The driver of the SUV is cooperating with police, and the crash is believed to be an accident, possibly due to a stuck accelerator or accelerator mistaken for a brake, he said.

A glass panel was blown out during the crash. The building is stable, but construction work was expected to be done Saturday night to secure it. It is unknown how long the business will be closed, Ison said.

No names have been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
