Overnight storm caused damage at Indian Creek schools

Strong winds in excess of 60 miles per hour damaged vehicles early Monday at Indian Creek schools, and destroyed about 30 feet of fencing, officials said.

The worst of the winds occurred about 2 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. No watches or warnings were issued at the time.

While the National Weather Service couldn’t confirm whether a funnel cloud formed or a tornado touched down, the winds were strong enough to carry a 15-passenger van 50 feet to the other side of a fence, and threw a band trailer about 100 feet, said Tim Edsell, superintendent at Indian Creek schools.

Maintenance crews were working Monday to clean up debris, he said.

“The damage we saw first thing this morning was out toward our new transportation and maintenance building, toward the southwest part of our campus,” Edsell said. “We’ve filed a claim with our insurance agent. We’ll have to see what steps we have to follow.”

Indian Creek buildings and buses were not damaged, he said.
