Roncalli’s Conjelko caps career at state

MUNCIE

It was a physically painful finale for Gabby Conjelko, but not an emotionally painful one.

The Roncalli senior battled through a broken tibia to finish 17th with a 35.0 in the all-around competition at Saturday’s gymnastics state finals.

“I actually re-fractured my tibia on vault, so it doesn’t feel too great,” Conjelko said. “But with that all being said, I can’t be too mad. It’s my last meet ever.”

Conjelko started on the floor exercise and finished 35th on that event with an 8.825. She tied for 37th on the vault (8.7), tied for 17th on the bars (8.825) and finished 21st on the beam (8.7).

“I didn’t really go in with many expectations,” Conjelko said. “I knew my chances of placing were not high, so I was trying to have fun this meet, and I did have fun. I’m in pain, but I had fun.”

Next year, Conjelko plans to attend Purdue or Xavier and help her sister Lexi coach the Roncalli gymnasts. This was her third time competing in the state meet.

“I got to compete with (Franklin Central’s) Austyn (Dykes), and Austyn’s been my best friend since I was 7,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end it.”

Franklin College

Softball edged by Denison

Franklin College wound up on the short end of a 2-1 score against Denison on Sunday afternoon. Stephanni Kleber took the loss for the Grizzlies despite yielding just five hits in seven innings; Sydney Bostic plated Shelby Crockett for the team’s lone run.
