Statewide tornado drill to take place today

Tornado sirens will sound as part of a statewide test today.

The Johnson County Emergency Management Agency will activate the sirens around 10 a.m. Tuesday for local schools to conduct tornado drills as part of Indiana’s Severe Weather and Flood Preparedness Week. The time was chosen so schools could coordinate their drills with the statewide test, said Stephanie Sichting, Johnson County Emergency Management Agency director.

The drill will coincide with a statewide test of Indiana’s emergency communications system at 10:15 a.m. The National Weather Service, in conjunction with the Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Broadcasters Association, the American Red Cross, and Amateur Radio Operators will conduct the test, according to the NWS.

The goal of preparedness week is to better educate people about the hazards of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and to help everyone be prepared when severe weather happens, according to the National Weather Service.

If the weather conditions are not ideal for the test, it will be postponed to Wednesday, the agency says.

Johnson County Emergency Management encourages families to take this time to discuss their emergency plans.
