Drainage work to begin this week at Summerfield Park

Local governments are starting work on the county’s first-ever two-stage ditch to reduce the risk of erosion and flooding.

The Johnson County Surveyor’s Office and city of Greenwood have partnered to convert the portion of Tracy Ditch that runs through Greenwood’s Summerfield Park to a two-stage ditch. Tracy Ditch is a regulated drain that runs south from Greenwood Community High School for seven miles until it reaches the western prong of Youngs Creek, according to a news release.

Two-stage ditches are designed to improve the stability of a ditch by spreading out and slowing down water flow and reducing the need for maintenance. It also improves drainage and ecological functions by reducing erosion, scouring and flooding, according to the news release.

Construction was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Construction is expected to begin this week and be completed by April 29, the news release says.
